It was clear that Tara was having a hard time fighting the tears. Her hand covered her mouth and she continued to blink down at the handwritten page long after she should have been done reading it.

Jason just sat and waited.

What was he really going to say, anyway? David had wanted them to meet. Fate had made that happen in the bar last night, but David had brought Jason back to Hope Falls.

Hell, he was having a hard time fighting his emotions about all of this too.

It was crazy that David had thought Jason could fall for Tara.

But as soon as he thought it, he wondered why that was crazy. David knew them both very well. He had loved them both. It wasn’t crazy that he would think they might hit it off.

People played matchmaker all the time. People set their friends up on blind dates or invited single friends to dinner parties with the intention of having them meet another single friend.

This actually wasn’t all that crazy.

Finally Tara looked up at him, her eyes shiny with tears. “So, now what?”

Now what? Indeed. A great question.

Proposing seemed like a leap. Asking her take her clothes off was maybe inappropriate at the moment. “We could read your letter.”

She nodded. “Yeah, okay.” She rose and crossed to a little space on the floor that was surrounded by boxes, as if she’d built a fort. She bent and picked up the envelope that matched his.

With a deep breath, she pulled out the letter.

But she didn’t unfold it. She turned to him. “Would you read it first?”

“You sure?”

She nodded and came toward him. She handed it over.

Jason opened the letter and started reading.

Dear Tara,

You have been the light in my life as long as I’ve known you.

I remember the day I found out that you were my daughter. It wasn’t as much a shock as I might have expected. It seemed right. It seemed, in some ways, that I’d known somewhere deep down all along.

Jason looked up. “Do you want me to read this out loud?”

Tara crossed her arms and pressed them against her stomach. She looked nervous. But something more…hopeful. “I don’t know. Do I?”

Jason gave her an encouraging smile. “I think so.”

She nodded. “Okay.”

He started over. “Dear Tara, You have been the light in my life as long as I’ve known you. I remember the day I found out that you were my daughter. It wasn’t as much a shock as I might have expected. It seemed right. It seemed, in some ways, that I’d know somewhere deep down all along.”

Jason glanced up. A single tear tracked down her face. But she said softly, “Go on.”

He cleared his throat and continued. “I know you’re wondering why—why would your mother keep you from me, why would I not tell you what I knew after I found out? It’s hard to explain, but I’ll try. Neither your mother nor I wanted to get married. We knew that from the beginning. We fell in love, we enjoyed each other, and we thought that we could keep on with an affair only forever.
